Heading Out West
Sometime next summer, maybe August, I am going on a nice, long overdue vacation. Look out California, here I come! And look out Las Vegas, I'm coming back!
I need some help planning this trip, and who better to ask, then the internet and the nice nice people I know who live out there. I flying into LA for about 5 days, then DRIVING out to Las Vegas for another 4 days.
Do any of you know where I can find some good road maps and websites to help me plan this crazy excursion? My main concern is getting lost and running out of gas during my drive to Las Vegas. Getting stranded on vacation is really not part of the plan. So any help you can give will be greatly appreciated. Oh and a few nice hotel and restaurants and some cool bars and places to be would also help plan this trip.

Woo hoo! Just five days in LA? I'm sure you'll have no lack of suggestions, tips, rides, and whatever else you need from all of us out here. And I can only speak for the LA crowd, but I'm sure you'll have no lack of places to stay.
As for maps I have a few you're welcome to borrow. Don't worry about the drive to Vegas. You just follow interstate 15 all the way there. Which is exactly what every other person on that road is doing. Just follow the crowd. If want to see it before hand check out google maps.

On the way the best place to get gas is in Barstow at the Lenwood exit. Victorville is also helpful, and Baker is closer to Vegas if you forget to stop at Barstow. But, most cars can make it from LA to Vegas on a single tank of gas so just fill up before leaving.
As for things to do while out here, it depends. What kind of food do you like? What kind of things do you want to see? LA is a big place and it helps to know what you're looking for first. What interests you? Shopping? Art museums? Zoos? Old theaters? Beaches? Rock climbing? Hiking? Clubbing? Swing dancing? Rollercoasters? Disneyland? Comedy shows? Botanical gardens? Wineries? Aquariums? Tar pits?
What makes a bar cool to you? Hole in the wall place with good beer? Loud, drunken karaoke? A good live band? Fancy place with cool lighting and expensive drinks? Pool tables with obnoxious guys watching football and yelling at the TV?
Whatever it is you want I'm sure we'll come up with something.
